I have a 1985 ford ranger with a 2.0l 4 cylinder engine, not a 2.3l, I cannot find much info on these engines. Were they uncommon? Were they considered good or bad?

In the tech section they have a write up on lots of engines... all the gas 4 bangers are lumped together since they share so much (all lima blocks basically bored/stroked versions of each other)

I think the biggest reason why you find so little is how rare they are, most people wanted more power (or so Ford believed) so they built more of the larger the motors and less of the little ones... plus the 2.3 was used in a fair number of car makes... I don't know of any other vehicle that used the 2.0 offhand..

Basically to get more info, just research the Lima 4 cylinder family, 99% of it applies across all of them

The 2L was definitely less common, they were all carbureted and offered through '88 in the US and '89 in Canada. They're the same basic thing but I believe were a smaller bore (I used to know...) so have smaller combustion chambers and I think smaller valves... Nothing really wrong with them other than being low on power...

IDK if it's even possible or not, but my first truck got a replacement engine from the junkyard that was in an earlier truck with intake and exhaust already gone and no markings left. I suspect it was a 2.0 that got the 2.3 intake, exhaust, and accessories.

I'd say it's possible. If you took those things off, you couldn't tell one from the other at a glance.

Probably the same problem as the FEs in my old F-100. For those the saying is that every FE is a 390 when it's listed for sale. Though the majority actually have with a 352 or 360. Maybe every Lima is a 2.3 on sale day.
