I have a 2.0L carbed 1987. From the oil fill cap, there is a hose which leads to the air cleaner and the hose *should* connect to something on the air cleaner. The problem is, when I got the ranger, whatever it connected to was broken/removed so there is a hole on the side of the air cleaner for that connection point and the oil filler cap's hose was doubled over and crimped closed with a piece of wire. I purchased a new cap with hose and then have the hose poking into the side of the air cleaner housing through that hole and forgot about that until recently when the oil buildup has been enough to start leaking down around where the bimetal sensor connects to the housing and was able to get some spots of oil ont he driveway.

My question is, what is that bloody sensor named and where can I find it. I've looked through my haynes manuals to no success and have browsed napa and autozone and a few other online parts places looking to see if I could figure out what I am missing to no luck. None of the wrecking yards locally that have any of the 1st gen rangers have any with engines in em still, let alone have any with the carbed version. I seem to remember on an older escort I had many many years back that there was a little plastic housing with a kind of crescent shaped filter that sat on the side of the air cleaner, but again, I have no clue what the name might be nor where to find it. Can anyone help?

Not sure about any sensors on that configuration because mine didn't have any on the breather. My suggestion would be go to a local Ford dealership and ask for schematics of the under the hood electronics and parts.

The only sensor that I can think of in or around the breather was for the carb...and that won't affect the oil or vice versa...it was something to do with the ICM (I think) that is located on the passenger side of the engine bay...and, of course, the choke connectors...

If you are getting excessive oil in the breather from the tube coming off the valve cover, then you may have either a plugged PCV or cannister (the one under the intake manifold that goes into the block) or excessive blowby caused by bad rings, valves or both.

I fought with my 2.0 for about a year with this same problem and ended up replacing it with a 2.3...but that was only after I cracked the head due to overheating and then the oil problem intensified...

Ford dealerships have very detailed diagrams...and they will give them to you upon request...but may be stingy about it so make sure you specify the engine bay wiring and maybe even the emission controls...because it's got to be a component of one of those two things...

If you have pics that might also help...

there is no sensor, its just a plastic fitting with a little mesh sponge type thing that snaps into the air cleaner. hell, you could just use duct tape and tape the hose to the air cleaner.

I never meant to say it was a sensor that is missing, my bad, but the little filter, and currently I do have the hose just routed into the air cleaner through the hole of the missing little filter's mounting spot. The problem is, without that filter, more oil vapors are allowed to flow out the cap's breathing tube and condense in the air cleaner housing and then it drips down through the bimetal sensor's mounting point on the bottom of the housing and then drips down the side of the intake and onto the ground. It's not a life-threatening oil leak, just something I would like to repair and am stuck trying to find the part and unable to just go to napa/autozone/ford/ect and go "Hey, I need XXX part."

simple, you just didnt know the part you were looking for.

I have been playing with 2.3 sice about 1990 and have owned a few carbed ones.

Just glad to help!
