its a 86 ranger BTW . The truck has a 2 wire connectorm (yellow/white and black) and all the sending units ive found look like they take a 4 wire connector .

the 4 wire ones have pumps on them, there used on the EFI rangers, IIRC 85 was when the 2.3 was switched to EFI so mabey a 83-84 2.3 can work. EFI pumps put out too much PSI for the carburator on a 2.0. those 2 wires im guessing are for your fuel float, it controls your gas gage.

Are you referring to an in tank fuel pump? They don't actually have a fuel pump (or they don't need one)...it should be a manual pump on the side of the engine (driver side)...

Maybe I'm just not understanding what you are looking for...

But you can also go with an electric fuel pump if that's what you want...I swapped mine out (from the manual pump) about six years ago...no, it was eight years ago...mainly because my block doesn't have a hole for a manual pump...

he needs a sending unit, EFI trucks have a pump attached to the sending unit. im starting to wonder if i just bought a 2.0 truck with a 2.3 block also... the block has no provison for a mechanical fuel pump, theres an on-rail pump that looks fairly new thats wired to the fuse box thats clearly added on. half of the wiring/vacuum isn't hooked up to the engine, no cat, 2bbl carb and the fact im able to reach 75mph on flat ground...

Yes my truck has a mechanical pump on the driver side of the block. It looks like the previous owner used a EFI 2.3 sending unit but he removed all the inside the tank parts (float, pump and wires). The only thing in the tank is a rubber hose haha.

Yes, the yellow and white wire is sending the pulse signal for my gas gauge the black is just a ground.

No luck searching 83-84 2.3 . I called ford and they told me it was obsolete no longer availible ..

I may have tracked one down at a local junk yard . Ill know after work today if its the one im looking for . Thanks for the help guys .

ah, so you just need to make your gas gauge work...

If it makes you feel better, my gas gauge works but not properly...it sorta bounces between full, when there is enough gas, to about an eighth of a tank where it starts reading normally...there are levels in between but they vary depending on hill grades and what way the truck faces the hill...I like to park it with the nose in the air so I always get a surprise when the gauge rises after the truck levels out...

I found one at the junk yard ! I installed it and the gage works properly .
There is a new problem now . If i floor the gas it bogs down to a close stall. It seems like its no getting enough gas now . I thought the strainer might be too dirty but i took it off and still have the same problem . It will run great at a slow acceleration and maintain a high PM.

Well, that's good news...sort of...

This new problem could be a number of things...but I'd say it's either gunk in the jets or a vacuum leak...

What did you change to get the gas gauge to work...the entire sending unit? The sending unit could have had crud in it and was plugged and when you installed it...you just transferred the problem to your truck...check the fuel filter on the carb or fuel line to see if that is plugged first...

Then you may need to pop the top of the carb to see if any gunk got in the jets...if not...you may have left a vac line off the carb or one has either developed a leak (strange, but possible) or has become disconnected in another possible STB (strange but true) situation...

It's almost always something simple...but back track on what you did under the hood if anything also...

Its a brand new carb but i will open it up and check the jets. I only have the distributor and pvc valve vacuum hooked up. IM going to replace the fuel filter and clean out the tubes on the sending unit. I ran out of time yesterday.

Do you know of a place to buy a replacement strainer for the sending unit ?

Not really, I would check with an auto parts store in your area...or find out what kind of screen it is and maybe fab one up from similar material...I've never actually seen one that I can recall so I have no idea what is used...my truck has never had an in tank pump and when I had the gas tank changed I went to a shop that did it without my seeing the sending unit pulled...

You may need to replace the fuel slosh module on the back of the instrument cluster, it's a little box that bolts on back of the cluster.
