1999 Ranger with automatic transmission is no longer moving backwards in reverse


The low reverse band broke...pretty common. If the solenoids were bad you would get codes for solenoids. Being it worked one day and not the next without you seeing any other problems I doubt the clutches are burnt. I have seen lots of late 90s rangers and explorers like that. Needs rebuilt...that band is pretty much one of the first parts you put in.

Our 98 Ranger's 5R55E started chattering in reverse, and then pretty much lost it. I pulled the valve body out of it yesterday, and the separator plate gasket was broken around the reverse servo and thus leaking and couldnt build up pressure. There was plenty of gunk in the transmission, probably from the band slipping so damn much. Putting in a new separator plate and hopefully it will correct it.
