Hi everyone,
The engine on my 99 ranger 2wd has gone bad and I need to put another one in there. it is the 3.0 v6 flex fuel (v). I know someone with a 1999 ranger but 4wd and wants to sell his 3.0,v6, engine. My question is: Is it going to fit? Are Motor mounts the same? What about the transmission. Mine is stick shift but the 4x4 is automatics. I appreciate your help.

Should be a plug and play swap. You will need to transfer your flywheel and clutch components, which you should just replace now while you have it apart, unless they were done recently.

There aren't any actual differences in the base engine between the regular 3.0 and the FF.

What about the engine mounts? The main reason I posted this question is that someone on craigslist is selling an engine that he claims doesn't fit his truck. He claims that he purchased an engine off of a 1999 4x4 ranger and it doesn't fit his 1999 2wd ranger. I emailed him and he responded that the difference is in engine mounts and transmission "ears" not matching.

I can't think of any reason why that would be.

Mountain Mike is our TRS parts guy. He'd be able to get the info about the engine mounts easier than I can.

The only reason I can think of for the trans not matching up is if someone tried to pass off a Taurus' 3.0 Duratech engine as a Ranger's 3.0 Vulcan. I think those patterns are different. Either that, or Captain Craigslist there is just doing it wrong. These things do need to be jostled around a bit to get them lined up right most of the time.

Thank you for the help. Now I get to put another engine in my ranger and get another 235,000 miles out of it.

BE AWARE!!!

1998+ 2wd trucks are coil sprung, and use different motor mounts than the 4X4 trucks (Torsion beam)

The mounts are $20-30 each, but you have to drop your front suspension to swap them out which is a bit of a pain in the ass.

The transmission will make no difference as mentioned.

Thanks one more time for all the help. The engine swap is all done and here is my input for the next person who does it. The 3.0 engine was from a 4x4 automatic ranger. The only thing that the mechanic did was to move the motor mounts on hole. The other thing was that I had too get some kind of little bushing to put on in the back of the engine for my manual transmission shaft to fit. It all went well thank you
