about 30K miles ago I put in a performance clutch.
It's been making alot of rattling noise. I got it because it was lighter than the stock clutch which helped with acceleration and it had more 'grab' than stock.
There are several vendors on the market that make clutches for the 1999 Ranger.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a long life better than stock clutch replacement? It's a daily driver, no serious HP mods or anything. I'd like to not have to replace it again for at least 100K.

Thanks!

I know of handful of guys running very built 4.0Ls, and the majority actually run a stock clutch because it holds as well as any other and lasts the longest. I got 200,000kms out of mine and would have got more had it not been for killing it in a swamp as a young teenager...

That being said, I replaced mine with a performance version from Fenco and have had great luck, and have been running 35/37" tires and towing with it and have never had an issue with slip/chatter etc.

Thanks wahlatrom... good info!

luk or stock. maybe a stage one exedy?

but stock is more than sufficiant. just stay away from those "puck" style clutches.

your left leg will thank you.

I am installing a Sachs clutch. It is basically a Luk clutch. It also seems to be exactly what Ford installed originally because it looks exactly like what was originally in there.

The original clutch was a good one for my 4.0 SOHC engine. I towed with it a lot and did considerable amount of off-road also. The clutch itself looks to still have another 100,000 miles on it but the throw out bearing went bad. Since everything is already apart and I already bought a complete clutch kit so I will go ahead and install the new stuff.

I can't imagine a clutch outlasting the original one. There may be performance clutches that hook up better but from my experience they seem to have undesirable street-ability manners.

Always go stock replacement, and make sure you resurface the flywheel... The PO on my truck did neither and now I have a truck with a terribly stiff pedal and it chatters horribly... I hardly even use the clutch anymore it gets so tiresome...

Resurface

Where can you go to resurface the flywheel and is it easy to take off?

Thnks

Flywheel

I've searched online and Checker auto carrys the "SACHS" brand clutch kit.
Looking at their website, it seems like a decent brand.
The site also talks about a dual mass flywheel to reduce noise and vibration.

Has anyone used a dual mass flywheel on a 4-banger ranger?
Results?

You can take it to almoste any machine shop and have it resurfaced, or take it to a parts store like napa and they will usuly be able to take it some were to do it. no the flywheel is not hard to take off once you have the clutch and pressure plate off it is a little dificult to keep the engine from turning over so what i do is take a screw driver and stick it in a bolt hole of the flywheel and the other end were the starter goes (on a 4.0 liter). On the other 4 bangers i have done you could use an allen wrench put the short side in a tooth and another somewere like on the block. this prolly doesnt help much, i dont have pix.

Thanks "Lifted".
Even without pics, I think I can figure it out now.
