1999 4.0L 4x4 "shifting problem"

ok .. it started a few weeks back.. sometimes while on a hill "or Passing..." when the trans. would kick down it was like the gear wasn't there... let off the gas and it would engage and be fine... the the other day going up the highway i had cruise control set and when i got on a hill i tried to kick down and the same thing happen... but this time after ... i could not get it to go back into gear right away.. took 1-3 mins playing with the gas to get it back in ... when i got off the highway and went to pull out ... nothing happen... didn't slip just did nothing.. when i took it off "D" and into "1" it worked fine .. would shift into 2nd but when got to 3rd.. i had to play with the gas till it would go into gear, but once it did it was fine "no slipping" ... a little later i found out i have no reverse at all! nothing slips, just doesn't engage. i have rebuilt Auto trans befor but i know nothing about diagnosticing them.. can anyone help?

1st off, check your fluid level. Thats the easiest and sometimes causes a lot of issues when its low.

No reverse is usually a blown separator plate gasket, you have to remove the valve body to replace it. My trans also stopped working in D and had to start off in 1 then shift back to D. I'd start saving for a used or rebuilt trans, or a manual swap.
