HI I just bought a 1999 ranger ex cab 3.0 2wd auto. the truck was parked a year or so ago because it quit running it has ben sold twice since then but nobody bothered to fix it. the truck will not crank it will turn over but it acts like the starter is draging. it does have fire and i have put gas/starting fluid in the intake with no luck. it wont pop, backfire nothing. i havent checked the compression yet but im running out of ideas. To me it sounds like the timing chain might have broke but im not sure yet .
Any ideas?

I'm assuming that you've checked the battery already. All sensors are connected? Do the easy/cheap stuff first. A compression test would be a good idea for sure. If all that stuff checks out, then it may be a more serious issue. Will the engine turn by hand? 3.0's have a tendency to lock up if the cam synchro fails.
It's almost definitely going to have bad gas in the tank to, so be prepared to do some fuel system maintenance if you do get it running.

The battery is fine, I pulled one out of my other rangers to crank it. So far everything is connected. I haven't tried to turn it over by hand but it does turn over it just seems slow like the battery is week but it isn't. To my suprise the fuel still smells good but it is probably a bit dead.
Ideas?

crank the motor and check for rpm readings, it could be the crank sensor not plugged in or faulty sensor.

I hooked my scantool to it and turned it over the computer is reading it so i think the sensors are fine. I also checked the fuel rail which has no pressure but the pump is running in the tank have to deal with that later. the problem is that it shound run on carb cleaner in the intake weather it has fuel or not. Im still thanking it may have broke the timing chain.
Ideas?

Does your theft light flash at all? My ranger had the same problem. Someone pulled the engine before I bought it and it was out of the rig for about 3 months. It would turn over but wouldnt start. It was getting spark and fuel and it was a totally rebuilt engine.

1999 and newer Fords had the PATS antitheft stuff on it and they use coded keys. If the battery is un-hooked or dead for too long it will reset itself i think. I had to have both of my codes keys reprogrammed to the truck and now It works fine.

You also say theres no fuel presure to the fuel rail, Check your fuel pump safety shut-off switch on the passenger side of the truck under the dash.

i will have to look at the theft light i havent payed it any attention. ..the fuel pump comes on and runs like normal when the key is turned on but there is no presher on the rail.. what do you have to do to recode the keys/truck?

connector hose from the pump to the hat on the sending unit. if its ripped it will act like its out of gas, also be shure there is fuel in it.
