1999 3.0 engine swap with taurus

I just picked up a 1999 Regular cab 4x4 5 speed that the engine is bad in. I want to replace it with a used one. I was wondering if an engine out of a taurus would bolt in without too much trouble. And if so what years. I realize I would probably have to use several components off the existing engine to make it work but I am wondering it the basic block, heads and internals would be the same.

you are going to need to change head gaskets and waterpump, otherwise the basic head, block, and internals are the same. You will need to keep most of the accesories off of the ranger motor, best to keep everything until you get complely finished.

Just out of curiosity, what is the difference in head gaskets and why do they need to be changed. Thank you for replying.

The head gaskets need to be changed because of the different coolant flow directions between the front wheel drive and rear wheel drive configurations. Look at the two engines, you'll notice that the coolant outlets, (where the upper radiator hose connects), are on opposite ends. The RWD is on the same end as the water pump, and the FWD is on the opposite end. Since the heads are the same, and thus the coolant passages, the RWD head and intake gaskets block off the proper portions to cause the coolant flow to go in a reverse direction from the FWD gaskets.
