So, I have been having a problem that I THINK is a "lazy starter". When I start the car, right after the engine catches, it sounds like a very rapid bunch of loud plinking bangs for a second or two. Nothing before or after. I figure it's the starter not disengaging fast enough. Does that diagnosis sound correct?

Also, can someone outline the starter replacement process for me? I've replaced them before on other cars and it's usually pretty straight forward, but I'd like to know if anything else needs to be removed first, any tough bolts or special tools needed, etc.

Thanks a lot!

Bump...anybody, anybody? Is it just as simple as it looks?

Thanks,

it sounds more like a dirty battery terminal or ground wire to me, but if it is a starter they are easy to replace, should be 3 bolts and the power wire

Disconnect the battery

Unbolt the starter, leave the electrical connected if you like.

Douche the moving parts that are visible (gear and shaft) with a solvent spray, follow that with some lube spray and reinstall it.

I go a bit further than that (disassemble and clean the internals & check the brushes lengths) but I'm sure a good douching will free up your lazy disengagement. If not, replace it.

That sounds great. Thanks for the info. I'll try the lubing idea first and then replace if need be.
