I have 2 rangers, a 94 and a 98, both are 2wd. My original plan was to v8 swap the 94 std cab due to the abundant availability of swap parts, but my son want to keep it as the 3.0/5spd for driving to school, so the 98 super cab is my swap project. I have a 302/c4 non efi combo already, but I need to know if that is the best way to go, or is the 5.0 as close to the year of my truck the best way to go? Any swap information like mount or header info is greatly appreciated. My plan is to lower it, v8 swap it, and drive the wheels off of it, so reliability is a must.. Somewhere I saw information to swap the 98 and up, but cannot seem to find it now.

On the 98.. just get an explorer the same year.(99-01) I think 98 was included in that range.
Is yours non return fuel system?

I think a carbed engine would be the simpler swap. Unless you are up on the fuel injection systems and all those wires, I would steering clear of it. Yes when they run they run better than a carb. But when you have problems they can be difficult to diagnose, especially the Fords which have no streaming data capabilities. All the older fuel injection vehicles are getting old enough now where they are starting to have wiring harness and connection problems, aggravating troubleshooting. And unless you have some custom work done, you have to keep the emissions devices, or live with error codes in the computer constantly. If you can get it by the inspection place (if you have them) a carbed engine can be clean and simple.

You certainly can get the latest model engine you can, but I would strip all the EFI off and put a carb on it.
