wrong gem module 1998 ranger

Having problems with 4x4 not working.. lights flash, no sound of motor working.. Read on hear that gem module on that year model gave problems.. went to dealer to check price and they said have wrong one on it...xl5t14b205ec is one on currently.. but f87z14b205eb is the one they said should have...

How long have you owned the truck and has this problem existed for the whole time?

I am not aware of any aftermarket place to get one.

To the best of my knowledge it is Ford, or junk yard.

4x4 shift control module is likely to be behind the radio bezel.

I suggest trying one of those from a junkyard.

^^^ What he said. If the truck has always had that module on it, and it worked before, they're trying to sell you a GEM without actually running diagnostics. You may just have an old number on your GEM that's been superceded. If their computer system is anything like the one we had, it might not actually pull up an old number like that.

Actually, I am thinking more along the lines of an Explorer GEM. They bolt up, plug in, and run most thing correctly. Notable issues of Explorer GEMs in Rangers and Sport tracs can be random PATS issues, odd 4x4 operation, and codes for a rear wiper circuit on a vehicle that never came with a rear wiper.

My shift control is built into gem they told me.. gem and abs only thing behind radio

Just bought truck..like this when I bought it..

Trust me, you have a 4x4 CM, also referred to as your Shift Module.

Nothing about your symptom indicates a GEM problem.
Try to find the 4x4CM at a junkyard from a similar year truck.
