I have a 97 ranger 4wd with a 4.0 v6. Got in today and I had no reverse. The pedal is fine and i am not low on fluid. I have been in need of a new clutch, pressure plate, slove cyl and all of that. Now that reverse is out what else could it be. I can cut the truck off and put it in rev. and everything is ok but putting it in while the truck is running all i get is grinding. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Shanezoid.

Sounds like the synchros for reverse are hosed assuming reverse has them. The gears won't engage when the engine is running because they can't match speeds. When the engine is off, there's little resistance so the gears can mesh properly. Just a theory though. I have a 92 5-speed that does something like that for 1st and 2nd. It isn't bad enough to not work yet, but engaging the gears when downshifting is very harsh.

I would guess its the clutch/pressure plate. If you look in most of the manuals to test the clutch, they say to test it against reverse as it revs down.

Is this a easy fix that i can do myself I do all my work on my vehicles myself. Thanks Shanezoid.

You could be, when my 3rd slave went out (yes 3rd), there was no visible leak. I didn't find the leak until after i took it all apart, and took the T/O bearing off the slave spring. It was a small leak, but still screwed everything up.

Look at the black ring on the T/O, and near the bottom on the slave. You can see small amounts of brake fluid. This leak was enough to give me all the symptoms your having, but it was un noticable until i took it all apart.
