Coming in second just makes you the first loser!
While looking for a 1997 Ranger to do a 5.0 swap into I found a 1997 with a 5.0 already in it! The kid swapped the motor, the trany/trans case and rear-end out of a 1998 Explorer. I ended up buying it with a plow for $2,800. Problem is, the ABS light on and I found that the ABS/4x4 unit is not in the truck! I have a 99 Explorer, (which I plan to pull the motor out of and rebuild for a later install into the Ranger), and it has the unit. My only guess it that the truck was originaly two wheel drive. Is there a good post anywhere that shows how one goes about transfering the set up or have any of you done it? The ABS light is the only thing keeping me from getting a sticker at this point and I don't want to just pull the bulb out; I want to fix it. I ran a few searches but didn't come up with anything that I need. Thanks.

'97 Rangers were available with two wheel ABS, or 4 wheel. The 4 wheel ABS trucks had the big abs pump in the engine bay, behind the battery.
2 wheel ABS trucks have the abs pump in the frame rail, ahead of the fuel filter.

Could be something as simple as the sensore not being hooked up (top/front of diff housing). The abs is unrelated to the engine ECU in a 1997 Ranger.

We can't help you fix the ABS system until you get us codes.

I will warn you, if you replace the ABS hydraulic unit or any component or line up-stream of the module it is not as simple as just bleeding the brakes to get the air out. You have to perform an ABS service bleed, which is usually done with a scan tool. It involves running the pump while holding the pedal down to run the air out of the hydraulic unit.

I didn't think it was gonna be simple. I pluged the harness into the pump that came with the box of parts and the ABS light went out for about a minute. I will try to get the codes and post them. Thanks for the help.
