1997 2.3 with a manual trans.

I've been getting a P0303 and a P1443 code.

The engine idles high, usually about 900 to 1,000 rpm.

If I accelerate at a slow rate and don't use much throttle, the engine will run pretty good.

If I use more than just a little throttle when accelerating, or rev the engine while sitting still, the engine will start to miss real bad. The "miss" goes away after just a few minutes... until the next time the engine is revved. The "miss" happens at a lot lower rpm when the engine is still cold (but in closed loop).

What am I dealing with here?

I had almost the same problem, for me, it was the MAF (Mass Air Sensor) thats located on ur intake, if you have a stock intake, its bolted right on the airbox (mine was only dirty, so i used carb cleaner on it and its runs fine now)

.

Edit: I found an article in the tech library about how to clean the MAF. I'll post up if I run into problems.

To clean the MAF, do I just spray the carb cleaner everywhere in it?

Were you getting a misfire code too, or just rough running?

Thanks for the advice, I'll try cleaning the MAF and see what it does.

Mine was throwing a code to, telling me the MAF was bad, apparently, when they get dirty enough, they can stop working properly, yea i sprayed a bit of carb cleaner in mine, then wiped out the inside with a rag to get it dry. Thats what I did, other people might of done otherwise, since brand new, they are about 130 bucks, i wanted to make sure mine was fine before i spent the money on a new one

Cleaning the MAF didn't help. Here's a video... it doesn't die in the video, but sometimes when the engine is cold it will die after revving and be very difficult to start again. The higher it revs = the worse it runs.

It sounds like you need a new MAF to me, you could either get one realatively cheap from a junkyard or a new one, but thats my opinion, make sure you get other peoples suggestions to

also, do you have a stock intake? or a aftermarket cold air intake? (my computer wont load your video) if its an aftermarket intake then you have to make sure the MAF is properly sealed/hooked up to the intake tube, for mine, the air muffler that has the MAF inside of it was getting loose, so the MAF was getting weak reading because the air would go right by it.

i can't find code p1443, my book only shows up to p0812.... after looking around the net a bit, i found people saying it's the purge valve for the charcoal canister that throws this code... i'm not familiar with this but here is a link on how to test it and replace it.
