I have a 1997 Ranger. I drove it yesterday made several stops and started fine. Then last stop turned key dash board signals would light up but engine did not turnover and no clicking. Came back later with tools but tried to start and it started right up.

Happened today again.

Advance Auto tested battery, alternator and starter, all good. said may be in switch.

Would appreciate any advice to get it back to being reliable.

Thanks, Bob S.

Check the cables themselves and the starter solenoid/relay that is on the driver side fender

I had this happen to me many times before i found the reason. It was the cable going to the relay on the fender. Was the one with the rubber end with 2 ends connecting to each side. Was broken in the rubber so it was almost impossible to see.

I had the same issue with this connector and when I cut that section out and used direct connections all symptoms cleared.

It could be a wire or connection anywhere on that starter/relay circuit so a good time to take each wire off and inspect and/or simply replace them. No amount of time and expense in this case is wasted to ensure starting reliability.

My 4 banner had a wire on the starter come off once. But it sounds like a simple fix whatever it is.
