I have a 97 ford ranger 4cyl. automatic transmission. Reverse works good. If you put the gear selector in drive the transmission will make a whining sound but will not go anywhere. I can put it in 2nd gear and it will drive down the road. After it speeds up I can put it back in drive and it will shift into third and drive normal until i slow down under about 20 mph then i will have to put it back in 2nd gear.

Is my transmission shot or could it be something simple?

It sounds like you have lost first gear. You can try some of that expensive trans fluid additive, but it just slightly band-aids it for a short time. I say start shopping for a new tranny.

yup the band snapped for 1st, (my co-workers 2000 ranger does the same thing, got it stuck and rocked it back and forth slamming it into reverse and drive and the1st gear band snapped, been like that for months and he drives it every day.

I'm not a tranny x-pert but we had something similar on a V6-1500chevy where I use to work (treated it like a 1-ton). When we towed it back to the yard we added some Lucas Transmission restore stuff and just reved the engine till it began moving (as directed on the bottle) then drove it back and fourth selecting all gears and eventually it came back to life (never 100%) but the fix lasted for about 2-3 years as a go-fer truck and never carried another load (keep a real close eye on fluid level and used about 20% restore when adding fluid) eventually the company sprung for a new tranny. Now they are back to abusing it :icon_rofl: I'm just waiting to hear it's gone out again.

This is the same place where we've got an 1996 3500chevy with 500,000 miles on the odometer... on it's 3rd engine; all 350's purchased with less than 90,000 miles on them. I personally was driving it when both of the previous engines went out; one was a oil pan drain plug issue (wasn't put back in :icon_surprised:) and the other was water in the gas tank :annoyed: fun fun.

Your co-worker drives it like that every day? Sounds like he needs a raise in pay or some common sense which he surely must be lacking...........a transmission is kind of important, but that's just my opinion. LMAO!
