I know someone who is parting out a 1997 Explorer 4wd ( same as my rear axle) and I was wondering if the 4x4 spindles are compatible? If not , can they be made to work?

thanks

nope, not even close.

The 97 explorer is SLA IFS with torsion bars....completely different front suspension than your 93.

"Next, the 1995-current front brakes use a TWO-PISTON caliper and caliper bracket. The bracket locates the pads and the caliper simply squeezes them. Additionally the bracket being removable make the steering knuckle a "non-wear" item.

Look closely at the "integral" caliper bracket on any split-pin caliper equipped Ranger and you might see what I am referring to. The pad thrust surfaces tend to get rather hammered.

The two piston brakes CAN be retrofitted onto earlier rangers and Generation I Explorers."

Is this because the spindle is 4x4 and the ranger is 4x2? Isn't the ball joint setup simular?

That is talking about 1995 to 1997 ranger front brakes. After 1994 the explorer was a completely different beast.

this is pulled directly from the tech board.

"On an 1989-1994 Ranger (or 1991-1994 2wd Explorer) you can simply replace everything outboard of the balljoints."

Could this be incorrect?

Your missing the point....

'95 to current explorer has the same setup as '98 to current rangers(wish bone upper and lower arms)

the caliper and bracket may be the same but how would bolt up the spindle???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

sorry it wont work.

I am unsure of how i am missing the point. I understand that the '95 explorer and the '98 and current rangers are the same setup. The tech article states that you can swap everything outward of the balljoints and it would work. it says it here.

http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Brake_Upgrades.html

read the article, it states that it can be done but what about 4x4 to 4x2 conversion? If I am misreading it pull some info off of the article and let me know.

That article is telling you you can use the twin piston brakes from a 95-97 ranger on your 93 ranger by bolting on the steering knuckles out. 95-02 explorer stuff will NOT fit as it is an entirely different style of front suspension.
