Hello,

This past spring, I replaced the A/C in my truck after not having it for the better of 10 years and by doing so, I have noticed a chatter in the engine.

You can hear it in the video above. I was recording the squeak for another thread but wanted to get your opinion on what could be causing the chatter. The chatter goes away with the slightest pressure on the gas pedal (idle set too low? Could that harm anything other than the benefit of burning less fuel?) I believe I can hear it in the stick while in fifth gear as well, but that might be another issue due to its age or maybe I twerked something when I replaced the clutch. (video linked below)

When the engine is cold, I do not hear any noise at idle, but shortly after it has warmed up, it becomes more apparent. As you can hear in the video, it is louder when I have the A/C on (first few seconds) but is still evident without it. The truck has always had a slight chatter in the valves, but this sounds more like it is coming from the bottom of the engine, but rear, almost like it would be the transmission or exhaust pipes?

For what it's worth, I've noticed that the normal valve chatter goes away if I fill the oil to the top mark on the dip stick. I haven't tried it with this chatter.

As for the transmission, I replaced the clutch back in October 2015. When I took it out, I noticed the shifter stub was caught on the floorboard hole, in 5th gear. Since then there has been a slight tick in all gears, but the loudest in 5th, at which, the sound of the A/C blower or radio easily overpower it and cannot be heard with those on. It sounds kind of like there is a missing tooth but I do not feel anything nor a loss of power and is always easy to shift. Is this something I should be worried about in the long term? What is the worst I could expect? Could the whole thing lock up, loose a gear, or loose all gears?

I placed my phone directly on the stick to get the sound recorded. Sounds much worse here than in real life.

I recently accepted a job offer and will be moving about 600 miles away and want to make sure the truck is road worthy before I take it out that far. Other than the usual maintenance items, is there anything else that I should consider?

EDIT: I fixed a vacuum leak from a stuck evap solenoid and reset my ECU. The chatter is much quieter now.
