I'm looking into replacing the transmission in my 1996 Ford Explorer limited. The explorer has a 4.0 V6, Electronic Transfer case (I hate it), and a 4 speed auto with overdrive.
Unfortunately, i cannot seem to find consistent feedback on which transmission came in this truck. I've been told only the transmission from the 96-97 explorer will work. Are there any other vehicles that come with a compatible transmission? A 4x4 ranger maybe? Forgive me for my ignorance, as I am rather new to Fords. I've recently caught the bug from one of my good friends.
I've been told this truck comes with either a 4R70W or a 4R55E (inconsistent feedback). If it came with the 4R70W then the transmission from the 2001 mustang would work, unless there is something i am missing. Any feedback on compatible transmissions, (and places to find them) would be incredibly helpful.
Thank you in advance to anyone who is willing to help.
(btw i apologize if there is a sticky about this already, did this at work while on a bit of a time crunch, i will look for a sticky and remove this later if one is found.)
