I towed my truck up to the shop and the said my flywheel is cracked and it's gonna be roughly $700. I'm trying to sell this truck, it has 160,000 miles and a rebuilt trans at 120,000. (autotrans) I am fairly repair savy and was thinking about replacing it myself to get it ready to sell. I have a ranger manual but have to hunt for it, but my question is..can I replace the flywheel without removing the engine on this model? How difficult is it, and do you think it's even worth my time, should I just sell as is? Keep in mind I just graduated college, no job, so I have free time...Thanks!

You're either removing the engine or the transmission. There is no way around that.

Whether or not it's worth it is a strong function of locale, and the seriousness of the crack. Though you MUST disclose it to the buyer if you don't fix it.

Removing an automatic transmission is time consuming and messy, but not particularly difficult.

I changed the flywheel in my 94 ranger(2.3) having never done it before and only looked at a chiltons manual. Keep in my that I am not a mechanic at all. It was a PITA, but not too bad. I also changed it in a non heated garage in 10 degree weather so that made it a bit more difficult as you could imagine.
Oh yea my was a manual tranny probally a quite a bit lighter then the auto tranny so you may have a hard time lifting it down yourself-you would likely need a transmission jack(if that is what they call it)and a friend to help.

Thanks for your replies!

MAK: I definitely would disclose the cracked flywheel to a potential buyer, if I chose to sell as is. They would also have a hard time not noticing something strange from the enormously loud sound. haha..

I am lucky to have access to a lift, a transmission jack and air tools at the shop on base thru my dad so I think we'll take a saturday to replace it with the chilton's manual and with the help of the resident mechanic. I was told to replace the main seal as well for future reference.

Thanks again for taking the time to comment on my post I appreciate it.

If you're about to sell the truck and the rear main is not leaking now, don't bother unless you really want to. Rear mains seem to last forever on these trucks. The oil pan gaskets are quite another story, and people very often mistake a leak there for a rear main leak. I've seen 350,000 mile Exploders with good rear mains....

Now, the manual transmission clutch and slave cylinder are quite another story, but you don't have that to worry about.
