Someone tell me if this will work, my intuition says it should but maybe I'm wrong.

My 96 4.0L has the cone style filter with a cylindrical shaped MAF housing. This uses a small white pigtail connector with 4 wires/pins.

My 2000 4.0L has the square box style air filter and external MAF with a flat pigtail connector, again 4 pins/wires.

My problem is I put the 2000 cab on the 96 frame & powertrain.

Now the mounts for the air box don't match due to change in styles.

I see that I have two options:

Fab the new cab support to accept the older style cone filter and MAF OR use the newer airbox & MAF but modify the pigtail on side to match up (wire colors are identical).

Which route should I take? I would like to just cut and splice the connectors as that would be easiest but am wondering if I will run into engine running problems if the two MAF's aren't identical.

You should be fine... I've run a 2001 SOHC, a '97 SOHC, a '96 OHV, and a '95 OHV mass air sensor on my '95 SOHC swapped w/ OHV ECM conversion. They all read pretty much identical.

Okay cool I'm gonna make a pigtail ill post pics later

Any 4 wire Ford MAF calibrated to your injectors will work. You could even use a 6 wire MAF and not use the outside 2 wires. They are for the AIT sensor which is integrated in the MAF in newer vehicles.

So to round out the information in this thread and help anybody in the future.

...I found out that if one takes apart a 93-97 conical MAF intake housing inside of that cyclinder is the MAF assembly and it is identical to the one in +98 Rangers seen externally.

So no pigtail was required, it is a PLUG AND CHUG swap from a concial style airfilter to a square type like in newer Rangers and Explorers.

Just FYI
