2.3L ('83-'97) 1996 2.3 No Start

Nvm. Battery was fine.

Found the problem. Alternator is 100% locked up.

......it'll buff out.

Looks like one off a 2001 4.0 SOHC is the same.... anyone know if they're not compatible?

A little JB Weld and a wire brush, good as new

Should be compatible check the 3 wire plug in

Physically identical, seems to be the same plug and regulator.

Pulley size is different; one from the 2.3 is a bit larger.

I'm having a blonde moment, so correct me if im wrong here- larger pulley means slower turning, less load on the engine, correct?

Or is this one of those counterintuitive deals where faster alternator means less load on it 😖

You are correct, the closer to Drive pulley(crank) size the closer it spins to Drive pulley RPMs
So if driven pulley is 1/3rd the size of drive pulley it will spin at 3 times drive pulleys RPM

So larger driven pulley = lower RPMs

In this case it shouldn't matter, I doubt if its that different
If belt doesn't fit or if head lights dim at idle then you may need to swap pulleys, but long shot on that

Here... I JB Welded it for you, put it back on.

If you think about it, alternators are just violins that wear socks.

Swapped the 2.3 pulley on to the 4.0 alternator, threw the belt back on, and it fred right up.

Idles at 1100-1200, so more crap to chase down. But, at least its up and running.

Took it for a ride around the parking lot, peppy little thing.

Thanks gents!

It a 4cyl 4x4... It will lose that pep just around 3rd gear.

Interested to see what will happen with a plug wire swap and a megasquirt... quick spin around the parking lot, and it really seems like this thing is tuned for tailpipe emissions, not fuel economy or power.

My '97 seems peppy until you get to 55mph or in 5th gear at anything under 3000rpm, wont go up a slight incline without full throttle or downshifting. One of the hills on my drive to work is about a mile long incline and it takes just under full throttle in 4th gear to make it up at 55-60... 235's and 4.10's is just too tall I guess, towed some firewood yesterday in the harbor freight trailer (4'x8' stacked 2' high, probably overloaded) and it was pretty doggy going up the couple hills in the 7 mile drive

I'm putting 4.56 gears in my 2.3 with 235/75's. Everyone keeps saying I'm insane but factory tires were 225/70 with 4.10s... really not a huge change considering.

Granted mine is a duratec with more pep than a lima, but 2.3s love low gears. Especially if you have an automatic and cant rev it a little more between shifts.
