Will a computer from a 1995 Ford Ranger 4.0 work in a 1993 Ford Ranger 4.0 or will I get pre detonation or any other issues?

95 was the start of OBDII for the Rangers and a lot of other light duty Ford vehicles. 93 is still firmly in OBDI territory. Not only will it not work, it won't even plug in.

It plugged in to my truck maybe it's a 94 but I could swear the computer came out in 95

Somewhere on the computer's label is a series of numbers and letters broken up into three sections. The middle section is 12A650. If the first two digits are F4 it's a 94, if they are F5 it's a 95.

An OBDII computer shouldn't even plug into your 93's harness.

So if it's a 94 would it work?

1990-1994 4.0l computer has 60 wire connector
1995-2000 4.0l computer had 104 wire connector
Do the math, lol

Yes a 1994 4.0l Ranger computer will plug in and work just fine in a 1993 4.0l Ranger

Is it knocking/pinging or KNOCKING like a bad connecting rod?
What the history?

And welcome to TRS :)

Yes it is

Yes it is what?

There are two choices

Not computer related

So whats the history?

Pretty hard to hurt the lower end on the 4.0l OHV, they normally go 400K+ miles

So I originally had a computer issue and I was missing all over the board so I swapped in the computer out of a 94 Cimarron great for a while and then developed the ticking noise between 2000 RPM and 3000 RPM but doesn't do it under load or coasting just when you're barely on the throttle

A little confused, GM computer would have different connector and wiring than Ford computer, and GM Cimarron was only made until 1988
