I oppologize if this is already posted.. Thing is, is that I looked and usually would look harder but im tight on time. I have a deal on a 2001 motor and trans with 100,00k for cheap and want to swap.. but need some expertese to let me know if this is in my budget based on conflicts..

Things that come to my mind off the bat are ...

  • motor mounts
  • Harness
  • intake
  • transmission
  • drive shaft
  • rear end
  • Transmounts

My current setup is a 4.0 2wd automatic, the 2001 is a 4.0 automatic 4x4. I will get the trans from it for a little extra if needed, but i just rebuilt the 95 trans 8 months ago, so off if its needed then np.. I will get it too, and take off the transfercase.

Anybody knowledged enough to say this is could be a smooth transaction

Thanks, BTW I,m new.. Great site guys!!!

If you can get the 2001 with intake, harness, and conputer you will be best off. Depending on the trans the harness will have transmission sensor connections you will need. You should also get the y pipe because the 2001 engine will undoubtedly have O2 sensors. If the motor is not out yet - pay attention to how many grounds are on the 2001 - there may be more than the 95. Get the motor and trans mounts too - you can't have too much stuff from the donor I guess. The kicker is the trans change and how that will effect the swap/computer/fuel mixture Go look at some of the posts in the tech library about electronics and fuel systems. You can sort it out.

I'm sure I've left something off - but someone will probably correct me.

First off, the motor mounts will be the same between any 4.0L. So you are covered there. The intake, I would think, would be the same. If not, an intake is not hard to modify at ALL.

Harness and computer-wise, it should be fairly simple becuase both trucks are OBD-II. The transmission/ tranny wiring meight be the difficult part.

The A4LD went away in 94 (I believe), so you do have to worry about that tranny being in the mix. If your tranny is the same as the tranny from the 01 (both 4r44e, or both 55r5e etc, or what ever they call the newer ones) then the newer computer "should" work with your tranny. But if they are different models (agian, ignoring the 4wd vs. 2wd aspect) then that makes things quite a bit more difficult. You will probably need to find a 2wd tranny of the same model that the 01' has in order for the transmission to work properly, or at all.

I hope that helps alittle.

Yeah, you can't run a 4x4 tranny without a t-case attached to it. The tranny from your 95 should definately bolt to the 2001 engine, but the electronics might be different. I forget when they started using 5-spd autos in the 4.0 ranger but the 95 might have a 4-speed while the 01 has a 5-spd. That would make running the 95 tranny with the 01 computer impossible. But I see no reason you couldn't just use the 95 electronics to run the 01 engine with the 95 tranny.
