Did ford make a such thing as a 1994 and a half ford ranger XLT? I was doing some work on my heater core and my repair has two different ways of removing the heater core one way for 1994 models and another way for 1995 and later models. The 1994 way doesn't describe my truck. I couldn't even find my heater core under the dash and now I'm stuck on removing it. I also notice the factory a/c sticker says it came with 134a refridgerant. I know in 1994 most vehicles still used R-12. Is this just something ford did as last minute changes or is it an official 1994 and a half?

Yo,
In 1995 the rangers changed the dashboard of the rangers. That is probably the reason for the two different removal processes.

1994 models were mixed on the refrigerant. My '94 2.3 XLT Ranger has R134a, yet the '94 B4000 Mazda truck at my old work still had an R12 system.

Alright sweet. Can anyone give me detailed instructions on how to remove my heater core, my Haynes repair manual isn't working all that well for me. It tells me to remove four screws and then just pull it down. However under the dash in the passenger side of my truck there is a carpet cover secured with push pins. Can I just pull the push pins out, remove the carpet cover and then have access to the heater core?

i dont have much experience with those style trucks, but that should be how it works.

My 94 takes 134A as well. I hardly ever use my A/C too.

I can check my Chilton manual. Sounds like you had it right though...

Place plastic trash bag on floor to catch the little bit of coolant that WILL spill.

With engine cold, push out those pushpins. You'll see the heater core.

Open hood and remove clamps on hoses at the firewall.

If your core has never been replaced, you'll likely have to cut the hoses to get them off the heater core so have some new heater hoses handy.

With hoses off, go back in the cab and pull the core out.

Replace the core, attach hoses, top off coolant, done.
