I recently got ahold of a cheap 1994 Ranger with the 4.0l V6 but I have run into wiring and computer issues. So far I have identified multiple spots in the engine wiring harness where cracks/holes in the wire insulation has caused the wring harness to corrode plus areas that appears to have had previous "work" done to them. The main computer is seemingly also on the fritz with some repaired trace damage after the capacitors died. I'm not sure %100 sure if the computer is dead or if the capacitor goo shorted anything but I'm thinking that I might want to start over with the electrical. This would most likely include rebuilding the harness and installing an aftermarket ECU which would also help me with any further engine mods in the future. However, I'm not entirely sure what kind of ECU to go with. I was considering a Speeduino/Ocelot setup since I have Arduino experience but I am unsure of how they work with an automatic transmission or if a separate module is needed. I have/am considering a manual swap but I was hoping to get the truck up and running before committing that kind of money and time. Any input or help is appreciated.

There are still 94's out there, maybe you can get a good harness and replace the harness instead of taking a lot of time trying to get rid of all the bad spots. I guess it would come down to how much is your time worth versus the cost and maybe shipping of a good engine harness.

I can not speak on the ECU issues though.

I just did this same thing for my 94 maybe ten days ago. Went to the pull yard and extracted the main harness from a 93 with a 4.0. The pcm was gone. but everything else was good.

I get txts from the yard when my selected vehicles come in, but you do have to act fast if you want a pcm though. It seems those pieces go fast.
