I have a 1994 4.0 Ranger 4X4 with a 5 spd manual tranny. Is there any other tranny that will fit other than from a 4.0L?

One from a 2.9 will fit. 2.9 4x4 M5ODR-1's are bit rare. I actually happen to be working on a 90' w/ one right now. I wish the 2.9 was done for (but he wants to fix the heads), so i could buy it off the guy......oh well.

As for the 2.9 version though.....it'll have the lower 1st gear and a wider gap between 2nd and 3rd.

The most common one that will fit will be from another 4.0 4x4. They were offered from 1990 till now. The only engines that have the same bellhousing pattern are the 2.8 and 2.9, and most (pretty much all) have a weaker, crappier transmission. Look for transmissions out of Mazda B4000s, Explorers and Navajos, they all had the 4.0.
