Can I remove the left head without removing the ac compressor? The manual indicates that I have to remove the ac compressor. I would rather not have go through the expense and have the ac evacuated and then remove the compressor if I didn't have to. I need to do both head gaskets, with 220,000 miles I have leaks on both sides. Any other suggestions regarding removing the heads will still in the vehicle is appreciated. Thanks , Joe

You shouldn't have to remove it, just unbolt it and move it to the side. Don't disconnect the lines.

Like mike828 said, just unbolt the compressor. There will be enough slack in the lines to move it out if the way.

I have removed the whole AC system from my '91 Ranger without losing pressure. It took me quite a while and I didn't put it back in, but it IS possible. I did it to see if I could.
