Does it try starting if you just have the key in the on position? sounds like you wired it the wrong way or something idk. but from the way it sounds i would infer that if they key is on then the starter would be on if it does it when bump starting. sounds strange for sure if its undrivable take the starter off and just bump start till you figure it out

no it just runs the fuel pump then when you start it the starter stays engaged

The old Jeeps used a Ford starter and solenoid. All sorts of weird stuff when the solenoid gets old. Turn the key to Run and then cross the solenoid between the 2 big wires. See what happens Or use the key to start. If the starter runs on tap the solenoid with a screw driver handle.

Extremely common problem with the 2.3 4 cyl in Rangers and Mustangs of the period. If the starter solenoid (on the starter) has a flat spade connector for the small wire, it is the older, defective, prone to shorting inside, version. You need to replace either the solenoid or the entire starter. New type solenoids have a threaded stud and the starters come with a wire pigtail with a ring terminal and a butt splice crimped on it. You cut your old spade connector off the trucks wire, and crimp on the new pigtail.

I learned about this several years ago when my original starter on my '91 did this and after talking with a auto electric shop, that is what I learned.

thanks for everyone's help! i found out what it was the bell housing was longer on one starter. The ranger just isn't a yard ornament now! :headbang:

You mean the "nose" of one starter was longer than the other?
If so you just encountered the fact that all 4.0 starters are NOT created equal.

THe Auto trans starter has a longer nose and simply will not work on a manual trans 4.0
