I found an issue with the Exploder after I bought it, figures...

Problem: Throttle. When I press the gas pedal down and release, the rpm shudder at 1300rpm before slowly settling at 1000rpm. The Ranger I had settled at about 750rpm. TPS or O2 sensors? Or could it possibly be the throttle cable. I haven't pulled anything apart, no tools.... I plan to buy the tools I need then fix it in one shot with others experience and knowledge.

Thoughts and comments are greatly appreciated.

Define "shudder"

Do you mean misfire? slipping in gear? Does it happen in nuetral...

Do you mean throttle response?

need more info

By shudder, it will just pause at 1300rpm. It is sitting with the parking brake on, in neutral and with or without the clutch pressed. It will do it anytime it is in neutral.

it sounds like it's bogging down (or hesitating) I would suspect fuel delivery issue. I would start simple...

Air filter:
Is it stopped up?

Throttle:
Check to make sure that the throttle linkage is tight (under the dash board follow the gas pedal up to where the linkage attaches) if it is loose - or too much slack you can use a zip tie as an add'tl spacer

Throttle Body:
Pull the TB off and clean it! the biggest response killer is the TB being caked with carbon and crud...

Fuel filter:
Replace it (requires a special fuel line remover tool) can get from Harbor Frieght cheap

Seafoam it!
1/3 can in the gas tank on next fill up and 1/3 in the vac line from the brake booster while running - shut off for 5 mins and start (somewhere remote b/c smokes like hell)

If that doesn't help

probably consider the fuel pump / sender screen replacement (PAI)

Hope this helps!

Ok, I managed to find some pliers and I pulled off the air duct going into the TB. The butterfly and the inside of the TB is caked. No Carb cleaner. So I will stop by some autoshop here in Alaska and pick up some tools then and get the TB cleaned, change the fuel filter and an air filter, (it looks clean but there is crud inside the air duct. The gas pedal is working as it should. Thanks! I'll give it a shot tomorrow and I'll let you know how it goes!

Trying this on my iPhone. I unplugged the battery, replaced the TPS, cleaned as deep as I could into the throttle body since my lack of tools, cleaned the MAF, replaced the air filter, and the ground is soggy so I'm waiting on the fuel filter. With that done, it idles a little better but I'm still not satisfied. What's a PAI?

Today I unplugged the MAF and the engine died so I'm assuming that the MAF is working as it should. When I disconnect the TPS, the rpm go from 900 to 1500. Could a dirty throttle cable create a slow engine deceleration? Also, what is normal idle speed for a 1993 4.0L.

NOrmal idle on mine is about 750-850 rpms. DOes it shudder at 1300 on acceleration or deceleration? Double check all vacuum lines

Thanks, I'll check them. It is only during the deceleration of the engine. Acceleration is fine.

Could it be the torque converter not completely releasing? Or binding in some way?
