I have a 1992 ford ranger sxt ext cab 4.0 5 speed. Bought the truck the guy said flywheel ring gear was junk. Can push start to get running and runs fine. I replaced the flywheel with a brand new flywheel. Now when igintion is clicked forward the starter just spins and will not turn over the engine. Every once in a whilethe starter will turn the engine over for a quick second and stop. Guy said truck has brand new starter. Any help would be great thanks.

Check all your grounds and make sure its the right starter If its the wrong starter it will just spin. But Bad grounds do weird things trust me ik lol

pull the starter and bench test it. make sure it works deploying and spinning. check you starter drive for abnormal wear. if the starter checks out good i would suspect a wrong starter. if i remember right there is a different starter for auto and manual trans on 4.0s in 92, as well as different starters for the othe engines that year.

If the ring gear is junk, it had to be grinding against something, probably the starter gear. The starter gear probably has chipped/missing teeth.

Except he stated the PO had changed the starter.....

Sir, if the starter looks new(ish) then I HIGHLY suspect an auto starter was installed. The auto/manual trans starters are only different in the snout length, gear extension. Unless you lay them side by side it is really hard to tell but of course the auto one will not work on a manual trans as the gear teeth will JUST touch the flywheel. Good luck!

New starter

New starter solved all of the problems. thanks for the help. I am guessing someone installed an automatic starter in the truck. Because i had the starter checked at a parts store and it was fine. It was about a 1/4 inch shorter on the shaft of the starter though .

Thanks for the help RBV family.

i ha a very similiar probled with my 88. my problem was that the starter was over shooting the flywheel it would catch every now and then it would catch but i would go ahread and take the starter off check the teeth on the flywheel and the teeth on the starter then bench test the starter. and it also would hurt to take a dvom and make sue the power cable to the starter is still gettin source voltage. check grounds and go ahead and put the starter back on. all this should help with your current problem and help avoid future problems
