2.3L ('83-'97) 1992 2.3 L Synchronizer

I am trying to enlighten myself about what I believe is a Synchronizer, however on my 1990 and 1992 engine there are no wires attached? Is it just a dummy or does it serve a purpose? I have attached a few photos.

Its the oil pump drive, so has a purpose
