About a year ago I purchased a 1991 Ford Ranger 3.0. The truck ran fine but I noticed it was smoking excessively from the tailpipe with a pungent gasoline odor. Then the truck occasionally wouldn't start. I performed some routine maintenance with no luck. Brought it to my local mechanic and was told it was most likely the head gasket. I just completed the head gasket replacement last weekend and it definitely needed to be replaced due to cooling system neglect but now I still have the smoke and strong gasoline odor. The truck starts and runs strong with no CEL.

Here are some things I've done so far:
Head Gasket, Distributor Cap and Rotor, Plugs and Wire, Fuel Filter, Cleaned MAF and Throttle Body, and checked the fuel pressure.

Anyone think they could help me out?

Fuel pressure regulator would be the first item I would look at, based on your description.

I was actually looking into that! Thanks for the input.

Yes, check the vacuum hose on the fuel pressure regulator, if there is fuel in that hose replace regulator
