Hi,
I have a 1991 Ranger extended cab XLT 4x4 with a 2.9L engine. I'm removing all the running gear (engine, manual transmission, manual transfer case, front and rear differential) and installing the running gear out of a 1992 Explorer 4x4 with a 4L, manual transmission, automatic push button transfer case, front and rear differential.

My question is on the wiring. I read on another forum I need to swap out the dash and wires as well, has anyone done this swap? I can't find any detailed information on this...

cheers,
Rick

Someone one with some knowledge will be along presently....
Meantime grab some popcorn and sit back and watch the shenanigans.

Don't listen to him.

You should never put a 4.0 in anything that has a 2.9.

I daily drive my 2.9

I pee on my 4.0 that's in the scrap pile.

You guys are a bunch of wankers.

The wiring on your swap should be fairly easy. The wiring between '91 and '92 didn't change much at all; you can likely leave your current dash in place if you want and everything will work.

The easiest way is to swap all of the engine bay harnesses, from the large white bulkhead connector on the driver's side firewall, to the engine computer in the driver's side kick panel inside the cab. The fuel pump and tail lights plugs on the driver's side inner fender should be the same and will likely plug and play. I have the wiring diagrams and factory evtm manuals for 1992 that I can post if you run into any issues

This is like the easiest swap, maybe ever. As BlackBII said use all of the engine bay harnesses from the Explorer. I'd personally use the dash harness from the Explorer as well - plus the section that goes to the rear driver's side that contains the electric shift t-case module, you will need that, and the little pigtail that goes through the floor to the t-case. I'm not sure that a Ranger that came with a manual t-case will have all the wiring present in the dash harness for an electric shift t-case - I suspect not, thus my recommendation to use the Explorer parts. You'll just have to shorten up the harness for that and stash the shift module somewhere.

See this thread for a little more information, I did this swap but used a 1989 Ranger and a 1994 Explorer donor (slightly different.)
