So I have a 1991 4x4 ranger with the 4.0L. I have the mazda m5od manual tranny, but it's taken a dump so I now have possesion of a 1991 mazda m5od from a 2wd ranger with a 3.0L. I shall be able to swap in directly this tranny, as long as I put my extension housing from my 4x4 tranny in place of the 2wd extension housing correct? Thanks to who submits an answer.

Nope, no workie. The integral bellhousing is completely different for a 3.0L.

also requires changing the mainshaft.

you could put together a single working transmission with the parts you have by taking the internals from the good transmission and stuffing them in the case of the 4.0/4x4 transmission, and using the mainshaft from the 4x4 transmission.
