1991 4.0 Ford ranger 2wd-4wd project

I have this 91 it’s 2wd and I’m trying to make it a 4x4 with parts from different year trucks. What I’m getting at is will a 97 4x4 transmission hook up to a 91 engine

As long as it's the same size engine.
Different size engines have different size bellhousings.

Note: the engine cross member is different between 2wd and 4wd truck and its weld in place. And the TIB (2wd) / TTB (4wd) front suspension bolts to the engine cross member.

As far as transmissions go: If you are sticking to same transmission, e.g. M5OD-R1 manual, you can always remove the tailshaft housing from both transmissions and the output shaft and swap. Not incredibly difficult on manuals, you just need a couple specialist tools, much more effort on automatic (everything goes in from front with output shaft being 1st component. So, you have to remove everything and reinstall, but if you're rebuilding the transmission while it is out anyways...)

It's way easier to swap frames if keeping stock style suspension, that's what I did on my '90, I found a 4x4 frame with the same engine and swapped that over which conveniently had the right transmission and everything...
