Okay i am looking at buying a 1990 ranger 2.9 for parts for my 1985 ranger with a blown 2.8
they are both manual but the 1990 is a 2wd, so my question is will i be able to drop the engine right in other than the 2.9 is throttle body and the 2.8 has a carb?
thanks in advance

yeah it will drop in, but you will need the wiring harness, computer, oh geeze what else, prolly fuel pumps, (cause the fuel injection needs the higher pressure) fuel lines prolly, cause I think it needs a return, its probably going to be a pain in the balls. Id just find a 2.8 somewhere, honestly.

it can work, just a lot to do, look in the tech library, lot of good help there. but if you do it, go with the 4.0

thanks, ya i have been looking to get a 4.0l but this truck came along at a great price and i need it running so i was thinking using the 2.9 untill i can find a 4.0l.

I don't know the answer to your question but if you could do it cheap are you saying put the carburetor on the 2.9.?

You will need the engine and dash harnesses, I'd just transplant the whole dash myself unless they don't match colors or you really really want to keep the inside looking stock.

Other than that you will need the fuel lines and pump(s), You might want to just take the whole tank, I think that's the newer plastic style, the computer, etc. That's all I can really think of at the moment.
