1990 Ranger Question

My Ranger is a 1990 model with a 2.3 engine and a manual 5 speed transmission.

Does the fuel injection system on my truck use O2 sensors? I got under the truck today for the first time looking around, and I did not see any O2 sensors either before or after the cat. The cat was still in place, and the truck has received a cat-back exhaust system recently, but no O2 sensors.

If this system uses O2 sensors, are they normally located near the cat or back up near the exhaust manifold?

Look a bit closer to the exhaust manifold. I believe you'll find an O2 sensor visible about a foot down from where the pipe clamps to the manifold. You don't have OBD-II, so it won't have a secondary O2 sensor checking catalytic converter efficiency. Just the one which is used by the computer to adjust the injector pulse width, and thus fuel flow.

Yep, just the one, it will be pointing down and forward about 6" before the flange to connect to the pipe.

I would suggest pulling the trouble codes (it's easy), go HERE and follow the analog volt meter method but you don't need the volt meter, jump the two pins at the diagnostic connector (it's located at the rear of the "Power Distribution" block on the passenger fender) then jump in the drivers seat with a pen and paper and turn the key on and watch the flashes of the check engine light.
