I have a 1990 Ranger, 2.9, ext cab 4x4 w/auto locking hubs.
I have the manual lockouts off my 88 Ranger I recently junked
out. the guy who bought the parted out 88 shipped the hubs
only back to me. I was hoping all I had to do to swap in the
manuals, was to just take the tires off, slip off the auto hubs,
slip on the manuals, put the tires back on and go. from reading
here at the station, it doesn't look the case.

in order to swap, there are some washers and a nut that needs
replaced too?

yeap sorry to say. The nuts and other bits that hold the wheels on are different between the auto and manuals and cannot be used with their opposites.

The conversion kits will contain all the parts that didn't get shipped to you with the manual hubs.

Here is a link for how to swap the autos to manual. Mostly to show you the part differences between the autos and the manuals.

The part number for the D28 conversion kit is 95-27988. Both kits are around the same price either way. You'll have to get the kit to match your housing not the hubs and your hubs will have to match the axle shafts. Don't know off the top of my head if it's the same spline count or not between the two axles. Hope this helps!

10 bolts on the front diff = d35

12 bolts on the front diff = d28

hmmmm, 10 bolts. I'm :thefinger:

:dunno:

think i read where the splines are different. anyone want to trade hubs? :icon_confused:

guess I'll be getting new a auto locking repair kit. :annoyed:

Be glad you have the D35, it's a FAR better axle than the D28 (just look how much bigger it's shafts are vs. the little tiny splined socket in those old D28 hubs you got). :icon_thumby:

Though I would suggest eventually getting rid of the auto hubs themselves, they aren't any more reliable than their D28 counterparts. If you can't find any D35 manual hubs in a wrecking yard, Warn makes some nice replacement hubs for it.
