I have a 1990 Ranger that I'm in the process of building. I plan on using a stock width 1992 Explorer 8.8 (plus 1.5" each side).

I'm attempting to shovel a 17x8" with 5.67 backspacing (30mm offset) in rear, and use 15x6" with 3.5" backspacing (0mm offset) in the front.

Normally I'd install the rear then figure out what I need backspace-wise, but in this case I can't. I want the rear tire to be tucked inside the fender well (rolled).

The wheels are made to fit 1998-2004 Mustangs, if that helps.

Will it work?

time to get your measuring tape and calculator.

8"wheels are 9" overall, minus 5.67 backspace results in 3.3" of wheel that will be outside the axle surface. add about an inch for sidewall bulge and you have 4.3". add both sides together, get 8.6" overall tire(s) outside the axle.
how wide is the axle hub to hub? let's estimate 61" and add that to the tires to get 69.6" over-all width of tire/axle combo.

go out and hang strings from the inside lips of your fenders, measure the distance between them.

does the estimated 69.9" fit inside the fender measurement? :icon_confused:

If existing axle/tires are still under truck:

Axle is 1.5" wider/side, back spacing in 1-3/16" more than current, wheels stick out 1" further....all math done says new wheels/axle are 1-5/16" wider than existing. If you place a piece of 2x4 on your existing tires do you have clearance?

Aside: Mustang Cobra rims fit nice under my daughter's '98 Ranger with 30mm spacers. Pictures are around here some place. (I'm certain there was more than 3/16" spacing to fender. Note: Her truck is a step side).
