I work in the engine lab for Chevron research. I'm the guy who figures out how the manufacturer wires their cars and engines. I recently acquired a 1990 Ford Ranger XLT, short cab, 4x4, 2.9 engine from my neighbor who passed away last August.
I figured out the 1990 Ranger fuel gauge issue for my situation. After installing a new fuel pump/ sender unit, I found the problem was the SLOSH module. I replaced the 100 micro F capacitor. The red thing. It works now. Capacitors go bad.
