Helping a friend out. Starts OK. Idles OK for a few seconds. Starts to get rough, sputter, backfire, shake the engines pretty badly. Runs better at 2-3k RM then sputters & dies.
Can't find specifics on the sensors involved as far as location & testing procedures.
I'm stumped. Please help.

Start here.

Welcome to TRS :)

I would start with Fuel Pressure from described symptoms
There is a test port on the engine(passenger side), looks like a tires air valve because that is what it is, a schrader valve, works the same way
After engine stalls press in its center pin and see if gas shoots out, should have 30-40psi pressure in there so should squirt out a long way, be careful
If no or low pressure change fuel filter first, could be clogged

Check FPR(fuel pressure regulator), also on the engine, it has a vacuum hose attached, check that hose for gasoline, replace FPR if gasoline is found

Cold engine only uses a few sensor
ECT(engine coolant temp) sensor tells computer how much CHOKE to apply to the cold engine based on temp
But..............engine should run OK after it warms up if this sensor is bad, and it wouldn't cause a stall

MAP sensor can fail but also wouldn't cause a stall

About the only thing that can cause a stall is running out of gas or spark
Spark is using the TFI module which was a know issue as the module got older but..............wouldn't cause a stall, a no start yes, rough running yes, but not a stall

Which is why I think gasoline supply is the issue
And that brings up the computer, it supplies the gasoline by turning on the fuel pump and then keeping it on
When these computers gets 20+ years old the capacitors inside can leak and fail, there are just 2 or 3 and they are easy to replace, under $5 to buy
Because there is a running issue I would pull out the computer and inspect the 60 pin connector for corrosion, then open up the computer and inspect the circuit board and capacitors
Better to do this before buying ANY parts, because its free, lol

No never angry!! Was munching on some chips and had greasy fingers!!!

I'd honestly check egr and iac.. if it starts up fine then idles down and starts acting up, either idle airs not closing and causing a vacuum "leak". On startup it gets more fuel which kinda counter acts the leak...just my 2 cents
