I have a 1998 Ranger 4x4 with 32,000 miles on it (yes it's correct) and it seems to be lacking power. What do I need to do to tune it up and what should I check? Is there any specific brand of wires/plugs that are best?

Thanks for your help!!

this comes from the tech library....lots of good info there.
"a good set of spiral core plug wires, motorcraft plugs 44 heat range with the timing set at 12 btdc, a good cap and rotor with copper or brass terminals"

your local paarts store will help as to what brand fit the above.

change your filters, air and fuel.

to check for codes. so you can see if theere is underlieing issue. http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/OBD_I.html

I looked at the Tech Library and could not find any info on tuning.

Anyway I did find a suggestion to change the coil to MSD Ignition. Is this a good idea?

Are the Motorcraft 44 heat range plugs and timing set at 12 btdc stock? If not will it still pass smog next month with those?

Stock coils are fine.... the MSD are just a step up & $$$$. if it is getting a nice spark (bright white and wide..not thin and blue looking), at the plug... I'd look other places to spend the money.

the plugs are prolly a heat range up from stock....timing might be stock at 10deg....so nearly stock yes. They shouldn't adversely affect passing any test...should help it pass.

have you tried to get codes??? your Check Engine Light (CEL) may not, (probabily won't) come on even if there is a code tripped.
