1989 Ranger 2.9 no crank no start.

Try to find the problem and fix the original wire. Just my personal opinion but doing that stuff drives me more nuts then just fixing it right lol
I agree but I have one hand that works so taking wiring harnesses apart is a little rough

I agree with that 1000%.

To the OP: Did you replace the electrical ignition switch, where the wiring harness plugs in, or did you replace the mechanical ignition switch where the key goes?

If in fact the start circuit is shorted to the ignition circuit, which fits your symptom description, about the only place that that can even occur, is at the electrical ignition switch.
Yes I did

Take a breath and back up a minute. When you were jumpstarting the solenoid and you were hot wiring this or that, did you forget to pull one of those jumpers off? I’ve been guilty of leaving a test wire in place after I replace a part.

No, I don’t have anything else hooked up. I know the solenoid and ignition switch are good. Since the signal wire that goes to the S terminal has power as soon as you turn the ignition to on that leads me to believe it is shorted somewhere in the harness.

Understood, I didn’t mean anything critical. Sometimes it’s seeing a forest for the trees kind of thing, that’s all I was suggesting.

No problem at all. I’ll take any advice I can get.

OK, I am back at it. Had to have a hand surgery so it held me up for a little bit. The wiring harness going to the TFI module has the red with light blue stripe going to the module. Does anyone know if a bad module would cause my problem of cranking as soon as you turn the key on?

Probably not.

If you cut the Start wire at the ignition switch connector ( or back the terminal out of the connector)... you have isolated that wire from the ignition switch. Turn the key to the run position... if the engine cranks... shorted wire. If it doesn't crank... likely your ignition switch... or somehow it's misaligned.

Inspect you ignition switch connector good for any sign that indicates heat... discoloration and deformation.

Wouldn't be the first time I've seen a connector causing the short.
