so i have an 1989 ford ranger with an automatic A4LD (2wd) i lost all the foward gears in it the second time i drove it after it sat for 17 years, it only has 20,000 miles on it i did a tune up and topped of the tranny. well it was hesitant to shift from park to any of the foward gears and the second time i drove it, it took extra long too engage but when it finally did it shifted through the gears fine like always but i pulled onto a side street to pick up my sis and when i put it in reverse to turn around it wouldnt go back into drive. i pulled the pan and it had alot of matal dust, fuzzy magnet. past that tranny fluid was nice and red. so im lookin into a bunch of different options. i have access to an AOD out of an 1987 ford LTD with a 5.0. will it mount up or am i S.O.L.
anyways, thanks for the hlp

Which engine does the truck have? Well, all v8s have a different bolt pattern than all Ranger engines anyway, so no an AOD will not work. A fuzzy magnet is nothing to worry about. If you had large metal chunks in the pan I would worry. IF it has been sitting for 17 years, maybe a seal inside has dried up and isn't, well, sealing anymore? I would do some more diagnosing before giving up on this trans.

I agree. You might want to keep trying to diagnose before giving up.

Otherwise I would swap in another A4LD or possibly swap over to a 5 speed.

and wow, 20k miles? Sounds like you found yourself a barn find!
