I just put my rebuilt 2.9 in, every thing is hooked up (not sure if its right). it will not crank , it acts like it isnt getting any fuel . You can press the relieve valve on the fuel rail and it squirts fuel a few inches. It will hit with starter fluid so it has fire . it just turns over and nothing happens. any advise would be great. Thanks adam

Ok, back the compact truck up a second.

You said it doesn't crank. Then you said it acts like it's not getting fuel. Then you said it fires with ether.

Well does it not crank (no spinny), or does it not catch (no runny)?

Ok, so it does crank.

Check around the fuel injector harness, make sure everything is plugged in.

every thing is pluged in, will it hurt if the plugs going to the injecters get crossed. what tells the injector to release fuel?

The injectors are batch fired by the PCM. They are always supplied with power when the key is on and the PCM grounds them as needed. 1 2 and 3 fire as a set and 4 5 and 6 fire as a set. The only thing I can think of is that you got the banks plugged in backwards.

the injectors do have 12 volts of power to them when switch is on. the best i could tell when the engine spins they have .5 volts on them. pulled a spark plug and checked for fire , have fire and plug still looks like it came out of the box. so im guessing its not getting fuel past the injectors.:icon_confused:

When you checked cranking voltage to the injectors, where did you ground the tester?

I used the ground that goes from the fire wall to the engine.

Try grounding it straight to the battery and see what you get. If at all possible it's best to ground your test lead at the battery.

As I understand, the injectors are fired by the processor grounding them, is this correct?

85-88 rangers have 2 fuel pumps... one in tank a low pressure one and one inline on the rail a high pressure one, meaning it should squirt far... not a few inches ... have you checked the fuel pressure? reason i'm asking is i had same problem at one point in time. when mine squirted a few inches it turned out i had to replace the in line (on the rail) pump

i bought a new bosch fuel pump due to the one i got from autozone being bad it was a airtex e2000...... with key on but not running the fuel squirted past the end of the truck... hope that helps you

**edit** the bosch pump number is 69100
