1988 B2 fuel filter?

Having a hard time getting the right replacement filter for an 88 2.9 fuelie. The frame mounted one has two lines per side of the canister which is bolted to the frame with 2 bolts. Only ones the local parts houses can get are the standard large metal inline filter with one line for inlet and one line for the outlet. If someone knows where to get the replacement filter that would be great.

That is the the canister it sounds like no filter in there. You need to be looking up underneath the brake booster, there is a single line running into it follow it up if you have to from the pump. It is secured by a hose clamp type assemble, on the 45 degree part of the frame under the brake booster, inside the frame rail.
 
According to my Haynes repair manual, early model fuel injected B2's used a reservoir filter. You can unscrew the canister reservoir and replace the cartridge.
 
yes they do come apart, but i have an 88 and mine didnt have one in it. so i left it, its much easier to put one there but the real one is where is i described earlier.
 
I just went through this mess 2 weeks ago. You can get a replacement filter for the cartridge but it is way too short to work. But since I didn't know about the front filter and already had the cartridge apart I had to use the new O-ring that came with the cartridge type filter to put it back together so I couldn't return the filter itself. Mine had no filter in it anyway when I opened it up. If it has the front filter I'd leave it be. Mine is an 87 4x4 and it took up about 3 hours time messing with it. The O-ring is a pain to get back in too,I had to soak mine in hot water so it would lay flat and then use a thin coat of grease in the groove where it goes to get it to stay put until I screwed it back together. I checked at NAPA about the quick disconnect fuel line to try to bypass it but that would have been like $48 for the four pieces of line for the fittings. I was gonna use rubber line between them and double clamp it but for almost 50 bucks I couldn't see doing that.
 
The BII's that have the canister filter DO have a filter in the canister. If yours didn't, it was supposed to have on.

Remove the canister completely and replace it with a normal filter inline filter. I did this to mine and have not had a problem yet. Just make sure you get the filter on the pumped line and not the return line.
 
mjonesjr,how did you do that? The pressure line is 3/8ths and the return is 5/16ths,at least on my Ranger it is. The in-line filters are 5/16ths,at least the ones I found. Do they make a Ford filter that's 3/8ths? How did you put the return line together? The cannister on mine did appear to have had a filter at one time but I read (I think here) that it used as a reservoir on some Rangers and is fine without it. None of the places I looked had the right cannister filter anyways.
 
Trust me the inline filter has the smaller ports on it an fits, because they
a fitting that has th 5/16" ID to mate with the fuel filter.

My '87 had a canister, but it had no filter inside it, I determined that by
taking it apart AS I was dismantling the vehicle to junk it.

The inline filter on an '87-88 is a PITA to change, because it is inside the framerail
right up against the engine crssmember.

I busted one of my ends on the connectors so I grabbed some fuel line and a nipple to attach it to the stock lines. Then I slipped the fuel line on the inline filter, clamped it down, and was done. I also used the nipples and fuel line to connect the return line together.
 
O.K. finally got a chance to look at the rig today and sure enough found the second filter that looks like the one the parts houses have been trying to sell me. Looks like it may be a PITA to get at. Tried to take the canister one apart with a strap wrench but can't get the bottom reservoir to unscrew, looks like it has been glued together, so going to leave it alone. Blew compressed air through it to make sure it's not plugged so on to the next filter. Thanks for the replies on where to find the second filter, not familiar with these rigs at all so learning a lot from this site.
