So, I just drove another 110 miles and spent another $150 on what I hope to be the right transmission. It's out of a 1987 ranger 4x4 and I'm going to try and put it in place of my 1988 5speed 4x4. A couple plugs are different, but can this be swapped with very few mods?

A picture is worth a thousand words.... post some of both transmissions.

Here's some of the new transmission (1987) they're from the Craigslist ad, so can't really look at plugs unless you zoom in.

Here's a corresponding picture of the old one. The red plug is what I am worried about. About the overall length is also about 3" longer. But hopefully I can bolt my shaft on and not have axle fall too much.

The 87 and 88 used similar but different transmissions. The 87's trans will be shorter and has a different hookup for the clutch. The shifter is also different and in the wrong position.

It can work with some modification. You need both driveshafts, and the rear has to be the right one for your body truck. The clutch line needs changed, and some floor trimming may be required. For the most part all the parts you need are probably on the truck you bought.

I only bought the trans since the rest if the truck was totaled and already went to the scrap yard. But the guy I bought it from has been getting 2-3 calls a day for it.

Well then, sucks to be you.

You need both drive shafts and a clutch line. And shifter boots, those are different too.

I may have some of the parts you need. I know I have the front drive shaft and do not have the line or shifter boots. I'm not sure if I have the correct rear drive shaft.
