I just bought a 1988 ranger 2.0 the weather got the best of the idle speed control. Has two big cracks in the top. I replaced c-module,Distributor cap,Rotor,Spark plugs. Order a new Idle speed control, but in the mean time tried to start engine get some backfire through carb with no start. So that tells me I'm getting some fire to the plugs. Will the idle speed control stop the engine from starting? what is the different between Idle speed control and MCU unit ? My manual does not tell me very much about idle speed control. This truck has 100900 miles, body good condition been setting for two to three years. Like very much to get it running.:icon_confused:

Welcome to TRS~!

Probably needs the carb cleaned out. Sitting for too long with a carb is not very good for them unless the bowl is emptied and the gas line was drained. Two or three years of gum and gunk in the fuel tank also will create problems for your fuel system.

There are cleaners you can run through the tank but you'd be better off if you drained the tank (siphon off as much as you can and replace it with fresh fuel) and then ran some carb cleaner through it.

To start though, you could try spraying a bit...and I do mean a very little bit, of quick start or something down the carb...hold open the butterfly valve and spray it in and try to start it...if it does start then you probably have fuel feed issues...and/or some lines gummed up in the carb.

Cleaning the carb takes a bit of know how since it has to be partially dismantled to do properly.

Oh, and if it does start but dies or idles too high (check to make sure the butterfly valves are still open) it may be something with the choke...

There is actually quite a bit to cover on this issue so I guess it would be best to start somewhere...like holding open the butterfly and spray some quick start down the carb...just a bit...because it is very flamible and a backfire could really ruin your day if you use too much...
